  1. What does Civil Engineering involve?

Civil Engineering is the key to many of the issues affecting our lives today society. Civil engineers are responsible for design, construction and maintenance in areas such as buildings, foundations, transport systems and water supply and drainage.

  1. Why studying Civil Engineering at IU (CE-IU)?
  • We provide a friendly teaching and learning environment with an international team of lecturers, advanced academic curriculum based on those from well-known foreign universities and modern equipments and facilities.
  • We have strong links with many international civil engineering departments and companies, ensuring that our students have opportunities of visting or working in international working environment. This means that students will gain professional working experience as well as improve communication and teamwork skills.
  1. What can I expect to learn in the Civil Engineering Department?

HCMIU – Department of Civil Engineering offers students a vast understanding in Civil Engineering field including: Construction Engineering and Management, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Management, Engineering Mechanics and Materials, Transportation and Water Resources Engineering. Students will choose to focus and specialize in a field of interest while being exposed to other fields. The department will provide educate and prepare students to use and apply their education in the real world.

  1. What is the length of an undergraduate program in HCMIU - Civil Engineering Department?

The duration of the program can vary due to student’s success in achieving 550 on the TOEFL exam and the completion of all required courses (140 credits in total.)

  1. What is the minimum score to pass a required course?

An average of 50/100 is considered a passing score, albeit indicating some significant weakness. As per school policy, a student can choose to repeat the course to improve a GPA and attain better firm understanding of course material.

  1. What courses do freshman students have to take and procedures to enroll for classes?

A freshman student need to take an entrance TOEFL test to demonstrate his/her English ability (Department of English). Based on the results of the test, each students will be allowed to take different English level courses (from IE1 to IE4, with IE4 the highest) and corresponding subjects. As first year student, your class schedule will be assigned by Academic Affairs Office. Starting from sophomore year, a student can choose subjects to enroll on website.

  1. Can I pursue a master or PhD degree in HCMIU – Civil Engineering Department?

HCMIU – Department of Civil Engineering currently offers an Undergraduate Program only, however in 2 years it is expected to offer Graduate Program as well.

  1. If the information I need is not available on the website, where can I seek for assistance?

A student is encouraged to come to Department of Civil Engineering Office (A506) for any information. Department Secretary and Faculty members are there to assist you.
